The Kent Police Department is investigating a serious injury collision that occurred in the area of the 2600 block of S. 272nd Street (map below) on Tuesday, April 9.

The collision occurred just after 6 p.m.

Police say that preliminary information is that the 36-year old female driver from Seattle was traveling westbound on S. 272nd Street when she struck a 27-year old Federal Way woman as she crossed the street in a marked crosswalk.

The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle stopped immediately and remained on location and spoke with officers when they arrived. Medics stabilized the female pedestrian and she was taken to the hospital where she is in stable condition.

The female driver was arrested, and has been charged with Vehicular Assault/Driving Under the Influence.

Police Investigators believe that alcohol and speed may have been contributing factors to the collision. Also being examined is whether the pedestrian had the right of way at the time of the collision.

“We are hoping for a speedy recovery for the victim. This is an unfortunate reminder that drivers need to watch for pedestrians and when crossing in a clearly marked crosswalk pedestrians should take the additional steps to ensure the roadway is clear,” Chief Padilla said.

Investigators continue their investigation in an effort to confirm the sequence of events that led to this possibly preventable incident.
