Communities in Schools of Kent

Ensuring student success is everyone’s job: schools, parents, communities.

Communities In Schools is the nation’s largest dropout organization. In over 200 communities across 27 states, we work closely with schools, social services, businesses and volunteers to get young people the things they need to learn and grow: after-school help and family services to stabilize the home. Without these basic supports, kids in need or at-risk are far less likely to succeed and grow into productive adults.

Getting kids what they need – when they need it.

CIS of Kent services students in 14 Kent schools.  During the last school year, CIS of Kent provided services to 3,880 students through programs like its Elementary Mentoring Program, hosted at 12 Kent elementary schools, and the Kent Performance Learning Center at Kent Phoenix Academy, a non-traditional high school program designed for students who have ability but are not succeeding within the traditional schools setting.

Proven, Evidence-based Strategy

Communities In Schools: the only dropout prevention program in the nation proven to increase graduation rates.

Recent third-party findings confirm: Of the many organizations working to improve student outcomes, Communities In Schools, through coordination of services, is proven to be more effective, and results in higher graduation rates, and higher percentages of students reaching proficiency in math and reading.

Communities In Schools of Kent’s Annual Fundraising Breakfast

Please join the Communities In Schools of Kent Annual Fundraising Breakfast located at the Kent Senior Activity Center on March 17, 2010 at 7:30 to 9:00am.

CIS Kent provides assistance to at risk students in the Kent School District through mentorships, internships, and support to stay in school and graduate. Contributing to success in school for today’s children and youth ultimately produces a future skilled workforce for area businesses which will be key to many businesses’ immediate and future needs. We’ve come a long way in the past five years and will celebrate our work March 17, 2010 with a St. Patrick’s Day fundraising breakfast. Please attend our event, at the Kent Senior Activity Center, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00. Dr. Edward Lee Vargas, Superintendent, Kent School District, has agreed to deliver the keynote address for us.

This is our primary fundraising event…reaching our fundraising goal allows us to continue to provide much-needed services to the at-risk youth in the communities that the Kent School District serves.

We appreciate your interest in supporting Communities In Schools Kent, helping make a difference in the lives of our most valuable asset – our children.

If you would like to attend the breakfast, serve as a table captain, and/or learn about sponsorship opportunities, please contact Alice Pfaff, Tom Wood, or Mike Heinisch. Hope to see you there!

Seattle T-Birds & Partners to Raise Funds for Lakewood Police

Gone but never forgotten

T-BIRDS AND PARTNERS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR LAKEWOOD POLICE INDEPENDENT GUILD THROUGH ONLINE TICKETS SALES TO DECEMBER 11 GAME

All tickets bought online Wednesday, December 9, for game against Tri-City Americans will go to fallen officer fund

Kent, December 3, 2009 - The Seattle Thunderbirds have partnered with the City of Kent, the Kent Police Department, ShoWare Center and radio stations Q-Country 102.9 FM (KNBQ) and Funky Monkey 104.9 FM (KFNK) to raise funds for the Lakewood Police Independent Guild.

The T-Birds will donate 100% of ticket revenue from online ticket sales between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Wednesday, December 9, to the game against the Tri- City Americans on Friday, December 11, to the Guild.

“We are looking forward to supporting the Guild and encourage our fans to let family and friends know about this worthwhile fundraising event,” said T-Birds owner and general manager Russ Farwell. “We hope it is an overwhelming success and we sell out the ShoWare Center, raising as much money as possible for the family of these fallen heroes.”

“We could not undertake this fundraiser without the help of the City of Kent, the Kent Police Department, ShoWare Center and Q-Country and the Funky Monkey. We were all completely shocked by what happened in Lakewood and hope to help as best we can.”

Q-Country and Funky Monkey will be providing air time to run commercials promoting this fundraiser.

“Words cannot express our grief for the families and friends of the four fallen Lakewood Police Officers,” said Shellie Hart, Program Director for KNBQ and KFNK. “Hopefully our actions will as we reach out to our audiences for their thoughts, prayers and support.”

The T-Birds will have a very identifiable graphic at the top of their home page on Wednesday, December 9, that fans will be able to click on to purchase tickets to the game against the Americans.

Flyte Family Benefit Dinner 9/25 @ Blair Acres

Submitted by a reader to iLoveKent.net

Mama Stortini’s is coordinating the Flyte family benefit dinner on Friday Sept. 25, 2009 at 6 PM.
Katie was a wonderful, loving, caring wife to Kenny, and mother to 2 year old Jacob and 8 week old Abbey. On June 29th Katie fell ill to the Swine Flu causing Abbey to be delivered via C-Section weighing only 2lbs 14oz. Abbey was at Tacoma General Hospital until arriving home on September 4th, but Katie was left in a chemically induced coma fighting for her life. Her Husband Kenny has been unable to work while caring for his family and has recently been laid off. Sadly, Katie lost her battle and passed away on August 11th not even knowing she had given birth. She was only 27 years old. Please help the Flyte Family with your prayers and donations. All proceeds will go to the Flyte family to help with living expenses, child care and the overwhelming medical bills to follow.
Thank you for your support!
The evening will include a catered dinner provided by Mama Stortinis, live band (Rumble Underground), silent auction and dessert auction.

To purchase tickets click on button below or contact Leah Stroud at flytefamilyfund@yahoo.com or 253-439-7181.
