Titusville Trading Co. – a blast from the past!

Titusville Trading Co. – a blast from the past!

Whether you collect antiques or simply enjoy nostalgia, you’ll enjoy a trip down memory lane at Titusville Trading Co. Located on First Avenue South next to Goju Karate, this antique shop has a little bit of everything — books, photos, postcards, serving pieces, coins, lighters, cars, vinyl, signs, furniture and more.

I stopped by yesterday between appointments and found all kinds of fun stuff, including an old Elton John LP (aka vinyl) for my teenage daughter who is a collector, some unusual carved buttons for my mother-in-law, and a beautiful China bread dish from France for me. Don’t ask me what I’m going to do with it, but it was beautiful and I couldn’t resist!

If you get a chance, stop by Titusville Trading Co. It buys and sells antiques and is a locally-owned family business. Sales associate Elle was on hand when I stopped in, and she was friendly and knowledgeable. The store’s wares are also affordably priced and pleasingingly displayed though you have to navigate through the larger pieces. Enjoy!

Spotlight Series offers affordable family-friendly entertainment

Spotlight Series offers affordable family-friendly entertainment

Each year the Kent Arts Commission puts on its Spotlight Series.  Check out these upcoming family-friendly shows in the 2009-2010 Spotlight Series:

"In the Mood: A 1940s Show"

February 20 – “In the Mood, A 1940s Musical “
Kentwood Performing Arts Center

“In The Mood: A 1940s Musical” is a show that offers a look into America’s greatest generation. Singers, dancers and a big band orchestra offer everything from up-tempo rhythms to ballads. The costumes and choreography are authentic, and they put the finishing touches on re-creating this sentimental and romantic era. At the Kentwood Performing Arts Center on February 20, at 7:30 pm. Tickets for general audiences are $28, seniors are $26, and youth are $20.

March 11 – “Men of Worth “
Kent-Meridian Performing Arts Center

“Men of Worth” is presented by Scotsman Donnie MacDonald and Irishman James Keigher. They’re performing traditional and contemporary Irish and Scottish folk music. The music combines vocal harmonies and a wide variety of instruments. Men of Worth have been called “the real thing in Celtic entertainment”. Also, Irish dancers and additional musicians join the duo for this pre-St. Patrick’s Day performance. Men of Worth will be at the Kent-Meridian Performing Arts center on March 11, at 7:30 pm. Tickets for general audiences are $20, seniors are $18, and youth tickets are $15.

Kent-Meridian Performing Arts Center

The Missoula Children’s Theatre is putting on a production of “Robinson Crusoe” on March 13 at the Kent-Meridian Performing Arts Center. The play is varying from the novel, and teaches the lesson that reading invites more than observation. It also teaches that books allow readers the luxury of the imagination. Open auditions will be held March 8 from 4 to 6 at Glenridge Elementary. Tickets for all are $5.

March 20 – “Luminous Edge” by Thomas Arthur
Kent-Meridian Performing Arts Center

On March 20, Thomas Arthur will bring us the “Luminous Edge”, his family performance. Tickets for general audiences are $12, seniors are $10, and youth tickets are $8.

April 3 – The sound of Maui, brought to you by Hapa
Kentwood Performing Arts Center

The sound of Maui is being brought to Kent on April 3. Hapa is a musical group that evokes tropical paradise. Combining ancient changes, Portuguese fisherman ballads and Spanish cowboys, melodies of early missionary choirs and more, they bring a dose of American acoustic folk/rock. They will be at the Kentwood Performing Arts Center at 7:30 pm. Tickets for general audiences are $28, seniors are $26, and youth are $20.

April 9 – The Wailin’ Jennys
Kent-Meridian Performing Arts Center

The Wailin’ Jennys are a band with a fresh acoustic sound, coming from Canada’s mid-western heartland. They are brought onward by an increasing fan base, which loves their harmonies. They have an engaging stage presence. They are enchanting audiences across North America, the U.K. and continental Europe. They will be performing at the Kent-Meridian Performing Arts Center. Tickets for general audiences are $24, seniors are $22, and youth are $18.

SSDF rocks the house with Sweethearts, A Valentine’s Tragedy

SSDF rocks the house with Sweethearts, A Valentine’s Tragedy

Last night SSSCo (pronounced Triple S Co) rocked the house with “Sweethearts, A Valentine’s Tragedy,” written and choreographed by Joselito Castillo.

Set in a 1920s speakeasy, this dark valentine show centered around the life of Delilah Jones (played by Shayda Abab) and her love affair with Sam (Castillo), a traveling trombonist after her money. With an eight-member cast, the performance included music from Tommy Dorsey, Eddie Cantor and the McGuire Sisters as well as a half a dozen or so playful dance numbers including a flirtatious piece performed on a portable mattress. The show concluded with Sam’s tragic-but-expected murder, Delilah’s subsequent arrest and a dance number performed by the entire cast.

Performed at South Side Dance Force, this clever production was entertaining to watch and a fun mix of different dance styles for all ages. In addition to the lively, energetic and spirited dancing, the cast members created an interesting synergy and were flawless in their execution of stage direction, prop movement and audience engagement. Having written a story on Castillo and SSDF, it was delightful to watch Castillo in action. His high energy and passion for dance – as well as those of his dancers – filled the studio. What a fun Valentine treat!

SSS-Co & Friends:

Sam – Joselito Castillo, writer, choreographer and owner of SSDF
Delilah Jones – Shayda Abab
Stanley O’Malley – CJ Conrad
Joe – Ryan Hayes
Herby – Eric Chapman
Betty – Denise Weitz
Myrna – Lori Stephens
Squeeky – Maria Crain

Featured music included the McGuire Sisters, Irvin Kauffman, Tommy Dorsey, Amy Serrata, Trumpet Jam and Eddie Cantor.

For more information on SSDF, see my article in the back cover of the February 2010 issue of Kent Magazine.

Darren Motamedy: Vote YES for Schools on Feb. 9

Darren Motamedy: Vote YES for Schools on Feb. 9

Saturday, January 23, 2010

Letter to the Editor, from Darren Motamedy:

Dear Editor,

I love my community of Kent Washington.  I have lived in Kent for over 40 years, and attest to the strength of our schools, not only because I attended Panther Lake Elementary, Meeker Junior High School, and Kentridge High School, but because today I am an educator in the Kent School District.  On February 9th, we are going to vote on two critical propositions, proposition one and two.  http://www.kent.k12.wa.us/ksd/cr/2010levy/web/index.html The purpose of these levies will be to “maintain” the current status of education for our children at our current tax rate!  By voting yes, we will continue to ensure that our students are technologically savvy in the 21st century.  By voting yes, we will ensure that our students will continue to have “clean and well maintained classrooms”, after school sports programs, music programs, safety officers, and a highly trained teaching staff that is preparing our students to become our future leaders!

I appreciate what the Kent School District offered me when I was a student.  My teachers taught me the importance of hard work, knowledge, dedication, and the high ideals of contributing back to the society that raised me.  Today, I am a band director in the Kent School District because of the ideals that my teachers instilled upon me.  I see those ideals being met every day in the classroom by observing my colleagues.

I see teachers tirelessly and lovingly instructing students every day.  I see teachers continuing their personal education by taking college classes, master classes, professional certification classes, and national board class to ensure that they are acquainted with the newest teaching techniques available to help their students.  I see teachers helping disadvantaged students by opening their checkbooks to pay for clothing, food, school supplies, and school camps.  Why?  Because they care about the future of our community!

By voting yes on February 9th, we are adopting the district motto to “Successfully Prepare All Students For Their Future”. Voting yes on February 9th will ensure our teachers have the tools necessary to “Prepare All Students For Their Future”.  The School Administration, Teachers, and School Board in Kent are united in our quest to build our community, student by student, classroom by classroom, school by school.  Yes means quality education for our children of Kent!  Yes means a positive future for Kent!

Sincerely,

Darren Motamedy

Darren Motamedy teaches 5th and 6th Grade Band in Kent and was the 2008 teacher of the year in Kent, as well as  the KCTS Golden Apple Recipient for 2009.

February Sensory Friendly Movie

February Sensory Friendly Movie

The AMC Sensory Friendly Movie for February will be The Tooth Fairy.  The movie will be Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 10:00am. The Tooth Fairy is the story of Derek Thompson, a hard-charging hockey player whose nickname comes from his habit of separating opposing players from their bicuspids. When Derek discourages a youngster’s dreams, he’s sentenced to one week’s hard labor as a real tooth fairy, complete with the requisite wings and magic wand. At first, Derek “can’t handle the tooth” — bumbling and stumbling as he furtively tries to wing his way through strangers’ homes — doing what tooth fairies do. But, as Derek slowly adapts to his new position, he begins to rediscover his own forgotten dreams.

AMC and the Autism Society of America offers a monthly movie to families affected by autism.  The lights are brought up and sound is turned down, all to make the theater experience more enjoyable for both parents and children.  For tickets visit the Kent Station AMC Theatre the day of the event for tickets.

Santa Arrives at Kent Station in Grand Style, Hip Santa House Now Open

Santa Arrives at Kent Station in Grand Style, Hip Santa House Now Open

3266_forWebKent, Washington, November 30, 2009 — Accompanied by the Rainier Brass Ensemble, Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived at Kent Station Plaza at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 28 in grand style. Children, families and shoppers  joined Kent Station in welcoming the jolly couple who  officially kicked off the holiday season.

After the welcoming ceremony and festive holiday music, Santa and Mrs. Claus held court at Kent Station’s Hip Santa House to hear holiday wishes and to determine who will pass Santa’s patented “naughty or nice” test. The happy holiday couple is available from November 28 through December (see website for specific hours). All ages are welcome, even if you’ve been naughtier than nice. Santa will also make a special appearance in the holiday parade during Winterfest 2009:  A Holly Jolly Day in Kent, scheduled for Saturday, December 5.

In addition, Kent Station shoppers, guests and well-behaved pets can have their pictures taken with Santa. With photo packages priced between $10 and $40, prints and digital photos are affordable and make great gifts. For an additional discount, visitors may donate a nonperishable food item or a new, unwrapped toy for the Kent Food Bank. Proceeds from the photo packages will also be donated to the Kent Food Bank.

“We encourage shoppers and families to come out to enjoy a little holiday spirit, Kent Station-style,” general manager John Hinds said. “Our Santa house is an affordable way to spend time with friends and family while benefiting our community.”

Last year, Kent Station and its shoppers donated over 500 pounds of food, 300 toys and $1,500 to Kent Food Bank families. Santa welcomes visits to his “hip house,” and Kent Station welcomes toy and food donations for the Kent Food Bank. This year’s event is proudly sponsored by BECU, MultiCare Kent Clinic and Fox Electric Co.

For more information including Santa’s hours and photo packages, prices and pick-up information, visit the Kent Station website at www.kentstation.com.

Located on 18 acres in the heart of downtown Kent, Kent Station is an urban village developed by Seattle-based Tarragon Development Company. The 470,000 sq. ft., mixed-use development features locally-owned and national retail stores, professional office space, and dining and entertainment, including a 14-screen AMC Theatres Cineplex and a branch campus of Green River Community College.
