Local Kent News and Events for July 10, 2017
We are back from hiatus and have successfully relocated to the Kent Valley. Thanks for your patience while we took a summer break to pack, move and unpack. We hope to resume our normal schedule this week.
This week will be a busy one in Kent with Kent Cornucopia Days. If you have never attended, make a point to do so. This is a fun way to celebrate our city while spending time with family, friends and neighborhoods. Enjoy free, live entertainment; sample ethnic cuisine; shop at the street fair; watch the dragon boat races; or pull up a chair and check out the Kent Cornucopia Parade. There is something to appeal to everyone. I hope to see you there!

NEW–Coloring contest deadline extended by Wed., July 12 – 4 PM
To make sure that everyone who wants to participate has plenty of time to get their entries in, we are expanding the deadline for our coloring contest to Wed., July 12 at 4 PM. You can coloring pages and rules at Rusty Raven Studio, Moore Than Rocks or at our co-sponsor, Artsy Fartsy Art Lessons, all in downtown Kent. Artwork will be displayed at Artsy Fartsy Art Lessons through Kent Cornucopia Days and winners will be announced Saturday. More details to follow. NEW–National Guard Reservist shot by WSP Saturday was a Kent resident
On Saturday, Michael Anthony Rude, 22, of Kent was killed by a state trooper after confronting officers while holding a knife. Rude was a reservist in the Washington National Guard. According to The News Tribune, state troopers received a call about 6:15 AM from a distraught man who said he wanted to commit “suicide by cop.” A trooper pulled over Rude near milepost 120 on I-5 who allegedly attacked the officer who then shot him. Rude died at the scene and the trooper was put on paid administrative leave. Read more here.
NEW–Sheriff’s Deputy hits pedestrian in fatal traffic accident
A King County Sheriff’s Office deputy, age 38, struck and killed a pedestrian in the middle of the roadway in the 2400 block of Pacific Highway South in Fife. The deputy, who was off duty, was the same deputy involved in a fatal shooting in Burien in June 13. Read more here.

NEW–Kent Cornucopia Days festival starts Friday
The largest festival in South King County returns to Kent this Friday, July 14 through Sunday, July 16. This super fun, family-friendly event draws thousands from around the region for its streetfair, food courts, beer garden, dragon boat races, soccer tournament, parade, 5K fun run and much more. REMINDER–Free breakfasts and lunches for Kent kids this summer
ICYMI, the Kent School District has partnered with two other organizations to provide free breakfasts and lunches throughout the summer to Kent kids. Days, times and locations vary, so please click the links in this post to get the most up-to-date schedule.
NEW–King County Fair is this weekend
In addition to Kent Cornucopia Days and Covington Days, the King County Fair is this weekend at the Enumclaw Expo Center. Hours are 10 AM to 10 PM Thurs., Fri., and Sat. and 10 AM to 6 PM on Sunday. The event includes 4H exhibits, food,vendors, music and attractions like the truck pull, Wenatchee Youth Circus and Pirates of the Plateau. Read more here.

REMINDER–Sign up for National Night Out on August 1
Knowing your neighbors is a great way to look out for your neighborhood and a good way to deter crime. Celebrate your neighborhood with an event on National Night Out – August 1.
