June 26 Update on Officer-Involved Shooting

The 20-year-old victim was identified as Giovonn Joseph-McDade, 20. He died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Kent Police Department OIS Investigation Update
On Saturday, June 24, 2017 at about 0015 hours, a Kent Police Officer attempted to make a traffic stop for a traffic offense in the 25400 Block of 104th Ave SE. The driver of the suspect vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit began. A Kent Police Officer attempted a pursuit intervention technique (PIT) to end the pursuit in a safe manner with negative results. The suspect vehicle turned down a dead end road at 99th & 244th.
The suspect driver used his vehicle as a weapon in attempt to ram one the officers and an officer used deadly force discharging his firearm at the vehicle in the attempt to stop the threat. The suspect vehicle rolled to a stop and officers discovered the suspect had been struck. The officer’s summoned aid and immediately began administering first aid but the suspect driver died at the scene.
Both of the Kent Officers involved in this incident are on paid administrative leave per standard protocol.
The Des Moines Police Department as part of the Valley Investigative Team is actively investigating this incident. Our investigators are interviewing witnesses and will be interviewing the involved officers to get all the facts leading up to the use of the deadly force. On Saturday June 24, 2017 at about 0016 hours, a Kent Police Officer shot a 20-year-old Auburn man following a vehicle pursuit near the area of 99th Ave and S 244th Street. The suspect was declared deceased following life-saving efforts from officers and medical personnel.
The Valley Investigative Team arrived to handle the investigation. The Des Moines Police Department is the lead investigating agency. No other details have been released at this time.
